13 Horror Movies Worth Playing on Halloween
Give yourself a real night of fear.
The goal of any horror is to scare you terribly, and video games are perfect for this. If in movies and TV shows you just watch the victim, then here you become her. You have to make difficult decisions with shaking hands and run away from the horrors chasing you without looking back, trying to stay alive.
Technically, not every project on the list is horror, but there’s something creepy and frightening about every one of them. If you want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Halloween, you will definitely find something suitable.
1. Until Dawn
Platform: PlayStation 4.
Adventure horror, in which almost any of your actions have a direct impact on subsequent events. According to the plot, a group of teenagers who find themselves in the night forest are terrorized by a maniac in a mask, but he is not the only threat. Until Dawn will not only scare you, but also surprise you more than once.
2. Alien: Isolation
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One.
You have to play as the daughter of Ellen Ripley – the famous woman from “Alien”, whose role was played by Sigourney Weaver. The plot of the project is directly related to the original film, released in 1979.
Alien: Isolation combines elements of horror and stealth, and looks no less cinematic than Ridley Scott’s masterpiece. It is easy to guess that the main enemy in the game is a xenomorph. But do not think that you need to be afraid only of him.
3. Doki Doki Literature Club!
Platform: PC.
In the first hour, you will wonder why Doki Doki Literature Club! is considered psychological horror. At first, the game resembles a standard visual novel, but then things begin to happen that are not found in such projects. Take this warning seriously, and then you will never regret it.
4. Stories Untold
Platform: PC.
A creepy episodic puzzle game that will make you nostalgic for paperback horror books, text quests, and VCRs. If you like Stranger Things, stories Untold will appeal too.
The game is not available in Russian language, but craftsmen are working hard to translate it. However, the project can be an excellent occasion to learn English.
5. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
Despite the fact that for a long time the Resident Evil series was going through hard times, its last part is one of the best representatives of the horror genre of recent years. The project returned to its roots: as in the first part, it is necessary to wander around the terrible house, only occasionally getting out of it.
And if you have a virtual reality helmet, then Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will definitely be the scariest game on the list for you.
6. Kraven Manor
Platform: PC.
The action takes place in a gloomy estate, the scheme of which can be changed, interacting with a small layout of the house. You have to piece by piece put together a puzzle to find out what happened to the owner. All this time you will be haunted by creepy mannequins.
7. Friday the 13th: The Game
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
In this multiplayer project, you will have to play not only for the prey, but also for the hunter. The game randomly selects one person for the role of a maniac in a mask of Jason Voorhees. He needs to kill all the players before they escape from the Crystal Lake camp. Or until time runs out.
Jason can quickly move around the map and use other abilities. Its victims, in turn, need to look for items that can help in survival.
8. Amnesia: Collection
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
In Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the first game in the set, you wake up in a creepy castle and find out that your memory has been erased. You are being hunted by a certain shadow, and you need to get into the very depths of the castle to kill its owner.
The collection also includes an add-on called Amnesia: Justine and a sequel to Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. The latter is not a direct continuation of the first part, but its events unfold in the same universe.
9. Bloodborne
Platform: PlayStation 4.
Bloodborne can hardly be called a full-fledged horror, but the game has such a strong spirit of Lovecraft’s books that it definitely deserves a place on the list. You are waiting for complex battles with monsters that amaze the imagination with their ugliness and live in gloomy locations in the spirit of the Victorian era.
10. Outlast Trinity
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
All games in the Outlast series are psychological horror games full of blood and dismemberment. It is impossible to repel the enemy – you can only run away from him and hide. In these moments, which for the most part make up the projects, the soul goes to the heels.
The Outlast Trinity collection includes an original game, a prequel add-on and a full-fledged second part. The console version of the bundle is only available on disks.

11. Prey
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One.
Prey is a first-person shooter that is the spiritual successor to the legendary System Shock. It’s more of an adventure game than a horror movie. But aliens, taking the form of familiar objects, are able to frighten so that you will not want to take your favorite mug in your hands for a long time.
12. BioShock
Platforms: PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One.
Another successor to System Shock, but this time more reminiscent of classic horror. The scene is a fallen underwater city. Among those to be feared are a deranged plastic surgeon, a sadistic artist, and a genetically modified big daddy with a huge drill instead of an arm.
On modern consoles, the game is only available as part of the BioShock: The Collection, which contains modernized versions of BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite.
13. Spooky’s Jump Scare Mansion
Platform: PC.
A free game in which you need to run from room to room along narrow corridors. Cute cardboard monsters jumping on you from the walls are completely harmless. But about the sounds coming from somewhere above, you can not say the same.
